Description: The Stampede Elm, also known as the Victoria Park Tree, has watched over Calgary for over a century. This iconic tree has witnessed the expansion of the Calgary Stampede grounds, and the construction of the Saddle Dome during the 1980’s. After surviving over one hundred years of development, the tree must be removed to make way for the new Event Centre. Calgary Parks has been working to find ways to preserve this historic resource, and is working with Calgary Municipal Land Corporation to assess the feasibility to move the elm to Enoch Park. Calgary Parks has also collected seedlings and seeds to grow at their nursery to plant as public trees throughout Calgary. They also worked with a lab in BC to get tissue cultures from cuttings to make clones for propagation.

The University of Calgary’s Archeology and Anthropology Department has created a 3D rendering of this impressive tree. This way, regardless of the success of all the above attempts to preserve the tree, we will have a lasting image of the Stampede Elm. You can view a video of the 3D rendering here.

Let’s sketch this iconic tree before it is moved!

I am hoping to arrange to have the parking lot open from 9am to 4pm for us. I will let you know Friday when the parking lot will be open. The official time to meet is at 11:30, and the photo op is 2:15.

I am also hoping the weather is nice enough to sit outside, so we can all get a good view of the tree. If it is super nasty out I will try to reschedule. If you just choose to sketch from your vehicle, please park far enough away to give everyone a good view. As far as I am concerned, you do not need to park between the lines 😁

Meet: Start sketching when you arrive. Plan to meet up at 2:15 to share sketches, and for a quick photo-op. If more than 10 people arrive, we will break into two groups, well distanced from each other.

If you are not comfortable meeting, then you are welcome to go during the week. Parking lot will NOT be open, you can walk into it though . Send your sketch to Belinda Ramscar by noon May 9. Email address listed on our web page, . jpg format preferred. Or post on our Facebook Page and I will grab it.

Don’t forget your masks!!! Must be worn when we can not maintain the proper social distance, especially when we are meeting at the end for the photo op.

Please stay home if you feel unwell, uncomfortable or are exhibiting any symptoms. https://www.alberta.ca/guidance-on-outdoor-activities.aspx
